Clyde Woods, a former Freed-Hardeman tennis coach, played tennis under Coach R.L Witt while he was a student from 1954-57. Woods was undefeated in singles for over two years, in fact, Woods only lost one set to an opponent during that time.
 
After Graduation

Woods went on to complete degrees at Abilene Christian University, B.A.: Harding Graduate School of Religion, M.A, M.R.E, Th.M.; and Hebrew Union College, Ph.D. Upon his completion, he returned to FHU as a member of the Bible faculty.

In 1975, he succeeded his former coach, Witt, as the new tennis coach. His conference coaching record of wins and losses was 59-3 over a five-year period. During that time, the team won five Western Division championships in the Volunteer State Athletic Conference. In addition, Woods was named Conference Coach of the Year in 1977, 79 and '80.
