As a Lion

If you were to look at the record books for the men’s baseball program at Freed-Hardeman University, one name that would stand out above the rest is Donald Martin. During his playing career with the Lion baseball program, Martin found his way into the record books in practically every offensive category imaginable.

Martin played for the Lion baseball program from 1994 to 1998 and in that time managed to set multiple career batting records that still have not been broken. At the time of his induction, Martin ranked first in triples (18) and stolen bases (151). He ranked second in career hits (257) and runs scored (222).

Martin also ranked third in walks (103) and at-bats (739) and fourth in career doubles (45). Throughout his four seasons with the Lions, he was a three-time All-TranSouth Conference Selection.

“Donald was one of the most significant players to play at Freed-Hardeman and contributed greatly to the foundation of the baseball program’s success in the 1990’s,” said Chuck Box, who was Martin’s coach during his playing career at FHU. “His toughness was unmatched. He had an incredible inner confidence that was transferable to those around him. He was truly a transcending player.”

After Graduation

After graduating from FHU, Martin began work at his father’s auto dealership in Chickamauga, Ga. In February 2002, he began his service in the United States Air Force, where he served 8 ½ years. At the time of his induction, Martin worked in auto sales in Chattanooga, Tenn.
