After Graduation

Many Freed-Hardeman athletes make their marks during their time at FHU.  For some, their greater marks come long after they have left Henderson.  Eddie Martin is among those who have made a huge impact on his profession after graduating from Freed-Hardeman.

A long-time varsity basketball coach, Martin has won over 600 games at three different high schools in the greater Atlanta area.   In recent years he added to his already impressive win total with five state championships, all of which came in 2006 and beyond.  He led Norcross to three consecutive Class AAAAA championships in 2006-2008, making his team the first in over 65 years to win back-to-back-to-back state titles in Georgia's largest high school classification.

He departed Norcross for Greater Atlanta Christian - where he began his coaching career in 1978 - after his 2008 championship and took little time in accomplishing the same level of success, leading the Spartans to a Class AA semifinal appearance in 2009 before winning back-to-back state championships in 2010 and 2011.

Before becoming a coaching icon in Gwinnett County, Martin was first a standout player.  He averaged 27 points per game in his senior season at Central Gwinnett and set a county single-season scoring record of 732 points that stood for 24 years.  The combination of his playing and coaching successes earned him a spot in the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame, alongside athletes like 1980 Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers.
