As a Lion

Mexico native Federico Contreras joined the Freed-Hardeman University Lion tennis team in 1995, under the direction of head coach Ken Miller. Contreras, a four-time NAIA All-American, is considered by many to be one of the most highly decorated tennis players in FHU history.

During his freshman season in 1995-1996, Contreras was named to the TranSouth All-Conference and All-Tournament team, and helped lead his team to a 19-2 record and No. 11 NAIA ranking heading into the National Tournament. He and his partner, Ricardo Ferreira, also won the Rolex National Small College Doubles Championship.

In 1996-1997, Contreras helped lead his team to a 19-7 record. He and Ferreira received a No. 5 national doubles ranking and won the Rolex Regional Championship, as well as the NAIA Doubles National Championship.

As a junior in 1997-1998, Contreras helped lead his team to a perfect 22-0 record and No. 1 ranking heading into the National Tournament. Contreras was again part of a Regional Rolex doubles title and finished the season with an 18-1 singles record and 17-2 doubles record.

In the 1998-1999 campaign, Contreras played in the No. 1 position for the Lions, leading them to a top finish in the Rolex National Championships, as well as to yet another TranSouth Conference Championship.
