As a Lion

Larry Mackin came to Freed-Hardeman College from Motlow State Community College.  He had graduated from Perry County High School in Linden, Tenn., where he was an all-state basketball selection.  At Motlow he was named to the All-Eastern team in 1974.

At Freed-Hardeman, Mackin was a standout in basketball and baseball.  A point guard, he still holds the school record for best free throw percentage with 89.3 percent.  He also held, at the time of his induction, the record for highest career assist average with 5.6 per game.  He set the record for most steals in a game when he took the ball from Mississippi Industrial nine times.

Coach Hoyt Kirk called Mackin a "coach on the floor."  "He always kept his head in the game," said Kirk.

Mackin played shortstop on the Lion baseball team.  Described by Coach Roy Sharp as "a very good contact hitter," he batted over .300 and excelled with the glove.  "Larry was a great team leader who made excellent base-running decisions," Sharp said.  Because Freed-Hardeman was in transition from a junior colleg to a senior college during Mackin's tenure, the school was not a member of a conference.

After Graduation

Mackin has been a touring professional on the golf circuit since 1986.  He won three tournaments in 1992: the Hilton Open, the Tony Coury and the Gainey Ranch Pro-Am.  In 1993, he played in the National Club Pro Championship and this year he competed in the Tucson Open.

He and his wife Gail have a daughter, Minon.  They live in Mesa, Arizona.
