Lady Lions unable to find offense, fall in extras

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Brittany Adair had a perfect game for 6 2/3 innings for the No. 3 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions, but the bats were quiet as the Lady Lions lost their first Mid-South Conference game against the Georgetown (Ky.) College Tigers 1-0 in nine innings.

Kennedy Harris-Bennett (5-4, 0-1 MSC) gave the Lady Lions a good start with a single down the third base line before swiping second, eventually settling on third base after a groundout. Harris-Bennett would stay stranded 60 feet from home after back-to-back Georgetown strikeouts.

The Tigers (9-7, 3-1 MSC) would sit the rest of the FHU lineup down in order before the bat of Harris-Bennett struck again with a bloop single beyond the shortstop in the bottom of the third inning, but never advanced. FHU's next chance came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Myleah Hardy hit a one-out double to right field, but a flyout and a strikeout kept the Lady Lions off the scoreboard.

The fifth and sixth innings saw both teams retire the side in order until Adair punched out two to start the seventh frame before, with a full count, a single past a diving Mattie Boyett at second base broke up Adair's perfect start. Adair would bounce back with a strikeout to move to the home half of the seventh.

The Lady Lions' best chance came in the bottom of the eighth inning when Cassie Hayes led off the inning with a single up the middle, moving into scoring position thanks to Madelyn Crabb's sacrifice bunt. Brooklyn Jimmerson hit a soft fly ball single that was too shallow to bring Hayes all the way home but moved the winning run to third base with one out. A popout and a groundout saw Hayes stranded at third base to finish a scoreless eighth inning.

The Tigers took advantage of a leadoff walk, seeing the runner advance to third on a sacrifice bunt followed by a single, eventually scoring the go-ahead run on a groundout.

Brittany Adair (4-2) was nearly flawless in the circle, striking out 14 batters, allowing three hits and one walk.

Kennedy Harris-Bennett tallied two singles, with Myleah Hardy, Cassie Hayes, and Brooklyn Jimmerson each posting one hit.
