Lady Lions secure series win over Bethel

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Despite being out-hit 6-5, the No. 14 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions had the bigger total in the run column, topping the Bethel (Tenn.) University Wildcats 3-0 in the back half of a Saturday doubleheader.

It was a single from the bat of Sophie Dunavant that got FHU (11-6, 4-3 MSC) into the hit column in the bottom of the second inning; however, the Lady Lion backstop was unable to come around to score.

The Wildcats (14-12, 4-4 MSC) threatened to lead off the third inning with a pair of singles, but Dunavant's on-the-money throw caught the lead runner trying to steal third before a punchout left a BU runner stranded.

All of the game's runs were tallied in the bottom of the third inning after Brinley Cousar was hit by a pitch, followed by Kennedy Harris-Bennett arriving on first base thanks to a fielder's choice. Karli Quillin would lace a single into center to score Cousar and, after advancing on the throw, set herself and Harris-Bennett in scoring position. Myleah Hardy would shoot a double into the gap in left field to score both Quillin and Harris-Bennett to give the Lady Lions the 3-0 lead they would keep for the remainder of the game.

Chloe Winters (4-2) earned the complete game shutout, striking out four Wildcats while walking two.

The Lady Lions spread their five hits across five batters with Brinley Cousar, Sophie Dunavant, Myleah Hardy, Kiersten Mesler, and Karli Quillin each tallying one base knock.
