Mesler's two-RBI day leads FHU to win

HENDERSON, Tenn. — The middle game of a three-game series between the No. 14 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions and the Cumberland (Tenn.) University Phoenix breezed by with the Lady Lions claiming victory 2-0.

FHU (17-6, 10-3 MSC) got started in the bottom of the first inning with Myleah Hardy placing a single to right-center but was unable to score. The Lady Lions were able to get on the board after Cassie Hayes singled just inside the chalk in left field, scoring when Kiersten Mesler had a two-run double down the line in left field to give FHU a 1-0 lead.

Cumberland's (17-13, 6-6 MSC) best chance came in the top of the third inning when the Phoenix put a runner into scoring position after a pair of singles, but the Lady Lions escaped danger to keep the shutout intact.

A pair of groundouts began the home half of the fourth inning was followed by Anna Kate Norton doubling to center field, scoring when Mesler returned to the plate to drive in the second and final Lady Lion run to finish the scoring at 2-0.

Chloe Winters (7-2) got the shutout win, allowing five hits and striking out three.

Kiersten Mesler tallied two hits and drove in both runs while Cassie Hayes chipped in with a pair of base knocks.
