Lady Lions drop close contest to No. 4 Campbellsville

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Swapping leads 16 times and drawing even 11 times tells most of the story in Saturday's Mid-South matchup where the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions fell to the No. 4 Campbellsville (Ky.) University Lady Tigers 74-66.

The FHU Lady Lions (13-5, 8-5 MSC) utilized the long ball to great success in the opening quarter. Of FHU's six field goals in the frame, four came from beyond the arc. After Rachel Satterly got the game rolling with a layup, Madisyn Baugher's triple was followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from junior Kalea Fleming. The Tigers were able to draw fouls, leading to five points from the charity stripe. A steal and a score gave Campbellsville a seven-point run before Fleming's late heroics placed FHU behind 18-16 after the first quarter.

The Campbellsville Lady Tigers (17-1, 11-1 MSC) began to use their size to their advantage by driving into the paint to bucket eight of their second quarter's 17 points from the key. Meanwhile, the Lady Lions took the opposite approach by continuing to show the outside threat. Baugher's 3-pointer was followed by another from Fleming, but it was Satterty's triple that flipped the script to give FHU a one-point lead with 2:16 remaining in the half. The Lady Lions would later extend that lead to three before a Tiger 3-pointer knotted the contest 33-33 at halftime.

The third quarter was the staunchest battle of the game. Neither team would lead by more than two points. Baugher and Satterly teamed up for 3-pointers, while the Tigers continued to drive into the lane and make free throws. It was a late 3-pointer by the Tigers that propelled them to a four-point advantage with the Lady Lions entering the final frame trailing 53-49.

The final frame saw the FHU offense begin to creep inside, bucketing 14 points in the paint in the fourth quarter. But for every make the Lady Lions converted, Campbellsville tallied two makes. Baugher's 3-point jumper with 6:05 remaining in the game pulled FHU within two, but a late rally of free throws from the Tigers sealed the game at 74-66 in favor of the guests.

Madisyn Baugher led the Lady Lion offense, going 5-9 from long range to help her to 19 points. Rachel Satterly was back on track by tallying 14 points and grabbing a team-high six boards. Kalea Fleming had a career night, bucketing a personal-best 13 points with three long balls. Raegan Purvine helped out with six assists.

The Lady Lions will hit the pavement north for a trip to Shawnee State (Ohio) University on Thursday, January 19, tipping off at 4:30 p.m. before continuing their travel to the University of Pikeville (Ky.) on January 21.
