WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Finishing their stretch of six games in four days, the No. 14 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions fell in their last game against the Bears of Shawnee State (Ohio) University 3-2.
The Lady Lions (21-9, 14-6 MSC) had plenty of opportunities in the finale, outhitting the opposition 9-6. FHU; however, failed to capitalize on those baserunners by leaving seven stranded. Karli Quillin was the first hitter to tally a hit with a one-out base knock to center in the top of the first inning, but the side was retired before she could advance past second base.
Shawnee State (15-20, 5-12 MSC) would strike in the bottom of the first inning after a leadoff single was followed by a stolen base. Another single to left field would see the Bears draw first blood to lead 1-0. A leadoff double to right field would start a second inning which pushed another SSU run across after a groundout and a passed ball.
FHU struck back in the top of the third frame after Brinley Cousar's leadoff single was followed by an infield single from Quillin. The Freed-Hardeman RBI queen drove in two more runs with a double to right-center field. More importantly, the senior catcher drove home the tying runs at 2-2.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Shawnee State would plate the eventual winning run after a leadoff double was followed by a single and an RBI groundout to settle the score 3-2.
In relief of starter Chloe Winters, Brittany Adair (11-5) was levied with the loss despite the 10-strikeout performance.
Karli Quillin was a bright spot for FHU, connecting for three base hits, while Anna Kate Norton chipped in with two hits.
