Huey shoves as Lions shut out Blue Raiders

HENDERSON, Tenn. — In the first game of the 2023 Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lions and the Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College Blue Raiders gave the attendees at Five Wells Field a treat, as both starters battled to a 1-0 final in favor of the Lions.

With Alex Huey taking the bump for the Lions (33-17), the senior continued to show his dominance by striking out two of the first three Blue Raiders he faced. After a weak liner retired the first Lions, Adam Smithson launched a triple that sent the LWC centerfielder careening into the center field wall. Will McCall aired a fly ball to right field deep enough to plate Smithson in what proved to be the game's only run.

The Blue Raiders (17-26) hoped to get into business in the top of the eighth inning by sending a pinch hitter to the dish. The new batter did his job by collecting a single into right field. Moving to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt, Lindsey Wilson had their first runner in scoring position. After coaxing a foul-out, Huey found himself face-to-face with the Blue Raiders' top hitter. Instead, the southpaw fired a strike to second base to pick off the runner and keep the 1-0 lead intact.

A leadoff double in the top of the ninth inning made Lion fans nervous, especially after the sacrifice bunt moved the tying run to third base. After a walk planted runners on the corners, the Lions took advantage of a baserunning error by the Blue Raiders. A squeeze attempt had both runners off and moving, but the batter was unable to make contact. With quick thinking, Mason Libla walked the lead runner back to third before tossing to McCall who applied the tag to erase the runner. With momentum entirely on FHU's side, Huey rocked and fired to strike out the final Blue Raider of the day and claim the victory 1-0.

Alex Huey (7-4) trusted his defense, giving up just three hits in the complete game shutout. Huey allowed only one walk while retiring seven Blue Raiders on strikes.

Baron Ratliff led the FHU bats, collecting two of the Lions' five hits. Sean Rooney, Zach Sanders, and Adam Smithson were responsible for the other three.
