KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Less than 24 hours after punching their ticket to the 2023 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship in Kansas City, six Freed-Hardeman University Lion basketball players were awarded for their hard work not only on the hardwood but in the classroom.

The 2023 Daktronics NAIA Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete team features, according to the NAIA, "542 student-athletes that achieved at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at their institution. In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended one full year at said institution."

For their academic success, Freed-Hardeman sophomores Dalton Colbert and JaQuan Lax were named in addition to junior Dawson Bailey. In their respective senior years, Zach Baugher, Logan Bonds, and Grigori Sibilev also were selected.
