Strong defense not enough as Lions fall to Tigers

October 15, 2022

HENDERSON, Tenn. — The Freed-Hardeman defense corps faced an onslaught of 16 shots, but good placement by the Lion defenders allowed just nine of the Georgetown (Ky.) shots to be on target, but ultimately two that got by the defense were enough with the Lions falling 2-1.

Freed-Hardeman (4-7-1, 0-6-0 MSC) knew it would be a defensive fight after the Tigers got off three shots before the Lions had any extended time in the Georgetown half of the pitch. Their first trip; however, proved fruitful when Georgetown committed a foul in the penalty area, setting up Joao Pedro with a penalty kick at 11:07. Firing to the keeper's left, the Brazilian netted his fifth goal of the season as he continues his stellar junior campaign.

After returning to action in the second half, Georgetown (7-2-5, 2-2-0 MSC) proved they were not going to let up the pressure, staying on the Lions' half of the pitch and being awarded four corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the second frame. Those corners paid off when a shot from the top of the box after a corner was kept out by a fantastic save from Omer Shifris, but Esteban Cardona was there at to toe in the rebound at 62:06 to tie the match at 1-1.

The Tigers had ample opportunity for set pieces, taking 13 corner kicks to the Lions' one. For the next 20 minutes, the FHU defense continued to stand strong until another rebound after a save provided opportunity for Salvador Nunez to score the winning goal for Georgetown.

Facing 16 total shots, Omer Shifris knocked out seven saves.
