Satterly's career night lifts Lady Lions to second win

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Freed-Hardeman University's Lady Lion basketball team earned their second victory in as many games to start the 2022-23 season, going 11-21 from long range to defeat the Stephens (Mo.) College Stars 78-67.

The Lady Lions (2-0) found themselves rattled by the early pressure from the Stars' defense, with FHU coughing up two turnovers and seeing Stephens put six points on the board before the Lady Lions were able to get a shot off. Rachel Satterly's jumper at 7:19 breathed life into the Lady Lions, who promptly went on a 13-0 scoring run to lead by five. Rees Berkey would draw a couple of fouls under the halo, and converted all four of her free-throw attempts to help give the girls in maroon a 20-15 lead after the first quarter.

It was in the second quarter that the FHU Lady Lions exploded from long range, with Satterly knocking down three of FHU's five triples of the quarter. Kelsey Bender helped out with three assists in the frame. Meanwhile, Stephens (2-1) bucketed four field goals in the quarter out of an attempted 15. FHU maintained a 42-27 lead going into the locker rooms.

The Lady Lions kept shooting well throughout the penultimate quarter, with K.J. White's layup at 6:40 in the third quarter giving FHU their largest lead at 21 points. By the end of the third quarter, FHU held a 61-47 lead.

Stephens would make things interesting in the closing ten minutes, bucketing nine unanswered points across two minutes to close the FHU lead down to two possessions. Drawing late fouls, the Stars hoped to stop the clock to give more time for a comeback, but the Lady Lions sank 9-12 free throws in the final quarter to cement the victory at 78-67.

Satterly led the Lady Lions with a career-high 18 points, followed closely by K.J. White's 17 buckets. Madisyn Baugher went 3-6 from long range to help her to an 11-point effort. White was one rebound short of a double-double, with the senior pulling down nine.
