Chumley's double-double helps Lady Lions escape Bears

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — A massive third quarter for the hosting Shawnee State (Ohio) University Lady Bears nearly handed the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions a loss, but a late defensive stop saw FHU escape with the victory 75-74.

The Lady Lions (14-5, 9-5 MSC) lit up the scoreboard in the first quarter from long range with Raegen Purvine opening FHU's scoring from beyond the arc before draining her second at 5:26. Four out of the next six buckets for FHU came from 3-point land with Rachel Satterly knocking down back-to-back, the second of which gave FHU a 16-14 lead. Madisyn Baugher would join the party before a Kelsy Bender layup saw the Lady Lions attack the paint. KJ White ended the 3-point barrage with a triple with 30 seconds remaining to end the quarter with FHU leading 26-18.

Shawnee State (7-13, 4-10 MSC) would begin to force the Lady Lions to drive to the basket in the second quarter, allowing just one 3-pointer from Satterly on the first shot of the second quarter. White and Elli Chumley would take turns driving into the paint for layups in the second quarter extending their lead to a maximum of 11 points before a free throw from SSU, one of eight from the charity stripe in the half, ended the opening act with the Lady Lions on top 43-33.

The Bears would stun FHU out of the locker room, jumping out on an 11-2 run across the first five minutes of the third quarter to trim a 10-point deficit down to one. Kelsey Bender's 3-point jumper kept the Bears at bay momentarily, but a set of free throws would tie the game 52-52 with 3:02 left in the frame. A layup with 30 seconds left gave SSU their first lead since the start of the game at 55-54, but a Satterly 3-pointer flipped the script to see the Lady Lions move into the final 10 minutes with a 57-55 lead.

The Bears' Kam Elzy would put the game on her back in the fourth quarter, bucketing 11 of Shawnee State's 19 points in the period. The Lady Lions, on the other side of the floor, kept hitting free throws to keep the Bears out of reach. With the Lady Lions ahead by a lone point, a set of missed free throws gave the Bears the ball with 20 ticks on the clock. SSU made it up the floor and drove into the paint, but a contested shot rimmed out to seal the 75-74 win for FHU.

Elli Chumley picked up her first collegiate double-double by tallying 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.  Lighting up the net of late, KJ White led the FHU scoring by collecting 20 points, going 9-11 from the floor. Rachel Satterly connected for four 3-point field goals to help her compile 14 points, while Raegan Purvine put 13 points in the book with a team-high five assists.
