FHU advances to MSC Semifinals with win over UC

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — After advancing to the second round of the Mid-South Conference tournament, the five-seed (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions upended the fourth-seeded No. 21 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots 65-61.
It was the Lioness (21-9, 13-9 MSC) range that helped the girls in maroon to an early advantage. Madisyn Baugher started the FHU scoring with a triple before Rachel Satterly and Kelsey Bender tacked on 3-pointers of their own. Satterly's third long ball of the opening quarter helped the Lady Lions to an 18-15 first-quarter lead.
After Baugher and Elli Chumley drove into the lane for the Lady Lions, Kalea Fleming joined the FHU 3-point attack at the 2:29 mark of the second quarter to help give FHU their largest lead at 12 points. Cumberlands (22-7, 16-6 MSC) would strike back late to stun the Lady Lions, with Channing Lewis tallying 10 unanswered points for the Patriots over the last two minutes to end the first half with a 34-29 score in favor of FHU.
After the intermission, the Lady Lions had trouble breaking through UC runs. The Patriots would fire into the third quarter on a 12-3 run to flip the scoreboard and see the Lady Lions trail 41-39. Cumberlands would tally eight points from the free-throw line in the penultimate frame to see UC lead 49-48 moving into the fourth quarter.
Trading leads and ties for the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter, it was Satterly's jumper with 1:52 that gave FHU a lead they would never relinquish. Raegan Purvine helped the cause with a 3-pointer before Baugher and Satterly breezed through late free throws to see the Lady Lions claim the 65-61 win.
Despite being out-rebounded, the Lady Lions capitalized on forcing turnovers by connecting for 21 points from the 13 Cumberlands turnovers.
Rachel Satterly went 6-10 from the field to help her to a 17-point quarterfinal, while KJ White chipped in with 14 points. Kalea Fleming had her third straight double-digit performance by adding 10 points with Raegan Purvine adding 10 points.
